Translating creative ideas into tangible benefits for NLB
In order for NLB to remain relevant and vibrant, it is important to foster a culture of innovation in the work environment by encouraging all NLBians, regardless of work arrangements, to boldly venture out of their comfort zones to contribute in radical ways to the dynamic reshaping of NLB. Innovation is more than being creative; it is about translating creative ideas into something tangible and beneficial to the organization.
Recognising that a thriving innovation culture must first be driven by top management, NLB proactively facilitates the changing of mindsets as well as nurtures and develops initiatives that drive the organisation forward.
Proof-of-Concept
Proof-of-Concept (PoC) is a method of rapid prototyping that is key to innovation in NLB. By maximizing time and resources within a limited period of time, NLB is able to test and evaluate the viability of an idea, which may otherwise remain an idea on paper, while minimizing the financial risks they might pose.
BlackBox Programme
The BlackBox Programme, thus named to represent a clean slate and a bank of limitless possibilities, is a celebration of innovation that aims to empower NLBians to explore possibilities and turn their ideas into reality. First introduced in 2006, the programme has enjoyed 4 successful runs, each taking place once every alternate year. The main highlight of BlackBox is a competition where staff are given the opportunity to pitch innovative ideas directly to senior management. Winners are given resources and support to test out their ideas in a 6 month PoC period.
Quest is a BlackBox 2008 winner and a trading card game aimed at increasing reading among boys aged 8-11 years of age. It was overwhelmingly successful, with cards running out within weeks of its launch and spawning 2 sequels. Click here to find out more about Quest
The StreetSG team, one of the winners of BlackBox 2010, developed a mobile application using augmented reality, plotting points of interest in Singapore and linking them to NLB resources
Library Innovation Centre
The Library Innovation Centre, or NLB’s ‘sandbox’, is an avenue for new technologies and concepts, both physical and digital, to be tested out. The centre also serves as an exhibition area to host visitors, partners and staff, creating an exploratory walk-through “see the future” experience that will stimulate and encourage more ideas.
