Partnering Up

Through explorations and adaptation of technologies, as well as actively seeking collaborations with strategic partners such as public service agencies, industry, schools research institutes and even individuals, NLB ensures that library users have access to a rich array of useful information services and resources that are convenient, accessible and relevant.

Read all about it!

“In digitising and providing access to newspapers still under copyright, NLB’s NewspaperSG service launched in 2010 has set a standard as yet unmatched by any library anywhere in the world. NewspaperSG offers tremendous value to NLB’s clientele, including non-Singaporeans. Furthermore this service has inspired other libraries to follow in its footsteps and has established NLB as one of the most advanced in the world with its innovative and groundbreaking services.”
– Frederik Zarndt, Chair IFLA Newspaper Section (28 Nov 2010)

Protecting the intellectual property rights of the news publishers is paramount to the continued success of the service. As such, no other library in the world had been successful in making an entire archive of newspapers available online for free access before. To address the IPR concerns of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), the project team proposed different access rights for onsite access using the computers in the library and for offsite access (anywhere else).

Through NewspaperSG, the accessibility of archived and digitised versions of Singapore’s newspapers makes NLB one of very few libraries in the world to have secured the rights to digitise all past issues of major newspapers in a particular country.

NewspaperSG is now a popular online resource of current and historic Singapore and Malaya newspapers.

The Open Innovation initiative aims to make available National Library Board (NLB) data and services for open access, enabling external parties to create innovative applications and mashups. This service was first conceptualised based on feedback and interest expressed by information service providers.

NLB is able to extend the reach of our services by keenly seeking alliances with industry players and offering data sets & web services to use with that of partners, harnessing industry expertise to provide better and more relevant services. This approach taken allows NLB to continuously improve & expand NLB’s data sets and develop and open up more NLB web services.

NLB Labs website was launched in September 2010 as a one-stop contact for applicant and feedback platform for NLB to manage the collaboration under Open Innovation initiatives.

Initially launched for corporate use by organisations, this was later extended to individual developers. With this process in place, NLB was able to collaborate with different partners such as Ministry of Education, Creative Technologies, Samsung and Bookjetty.com, merging their content with that of NLB’s to create new or improved services that enriched the experience of their target audiences.
